HEART SPEAKS TO HEART THE STORY OF BLESSED JOHN HENRY NEWMAN

Dermot Mansfield SJ

Dermot Mansfield presents a clear and vivid account of the life of John Henry Newman, a man who was subject to much misunderstanding and suspicion in the Catholic Church. ‘Heart speaks to heart’, the motto he chose when made a cardinal late in life, shows that his whole life was interwoven with a range of people, high and low, both Anglican and Catholic. This book offers a fresh perspective on Newman’s life, with contemporary Church issues and questions of faith and unbelief never far from mind.

Ultimately, though, it is Newman’s extraordinary care for truth that is apparent throughout. This being the year of Newman’s beatification by Pope Benedict XVI, it is a timely book that tells in a meaningful way the story of his long life.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dermot Mansfield SJ has worked mainly in the field of spiritual direction and retreats in Ireland, the UK, Canada and Nigeria. He was also involved in the training and formation of spiritual directors in Ireland, and lectures in the Graduate Spirituality Programme at Milltown Institute, Dublin.

IN THE SECRET OF MY HEART MOMENTS OF STILLNESS IN THE HEART OF CHRIST
Anna Burke

In the Secret of My Heart honours the Sacred Heart of Jesus, not only as a traditional icon, but as a timeless inspiration for all who seek God. Through the lens of scripture, Sr Anna Burke remembers how Jesus revealed knowledge of God as ultimately a heart experience.

Encouraged by the encyclical Deus caritas est and Pope Benedict’s exploration of love as that which most surely reveals God, the book revisits a timeless symbol of the divine identity, revealing that it is ultimately to a loving God that we turn for light in darkness, for meaning in life.
Sr Anna Burke shows us that Jesus is the experience of God, and the gift of Jesus in human history is most deeply understood in the secret of the heart.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Anna Burke RSM taught for ten years in Palm Bay, Florida, and for seven years in Lundazi, Zambia. She was also school chaplain for six years in Carrick-on-Shannon. She is currently involved in Adult Faith Development with a speci§ c interest in liturgy and scripture. MARTHE ROBIN
A Prophetic Vision of the Gospel Message

Bernard Peyrous; translated by Kathryn Spink

Marthe Robin is one of the most intriguing figures of the twentieth century. Born into a peasant family in a remote French village, by the age of eighteen she was confined to bed in a state of paralysis and by thirty-eight she was blind. Throughout her life, she received over 100,000 visitors, ranging from Church leaders and prominent intellectuals to farmers and school children, all seeking and receiving consolation, prayerful support and counsel.

Her own identification with Jesus was so intense that she bore on her body the marks of his wounds and every Friday for many years experienced the Passion of Christ. However, she was no ‘holier-than-thou’ mystic and insisted on her own ordinariness. Her courage and wisdom despite her suffering are an inspiration.

This book, based on Bernard Peyrous’ uniquely comprehensive knowledge of Marthe Robin’s writings and the testimonies gathered for her beatification cause, traces not only her life and spiritual journey, but also the growth of the initial community she founded (Foyer of Charity) and of others born from it throughout the world.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND TRANSLATOR

Bernard Peyrous, priest, doctor of letters and member of the Emmanuel Community, is an authority on the history of spirituality and the postulator for the cause for beatification of Marthe Robin. He was helped in the writing of this book by Marie-Thérèse Gill, vice-postulator and a member of the Foyer of Charity.

Kathryn Spink, author of numerous spiritual biographies, is the translator of Jean Vanier’s Made for Happiness, as well as many of Dominique Lapierre’s books.

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCILS
A Formation Manual

Debra Snoddy, Jim Campbell and Andrew McNally

A useful manual for the formation of a parish pastoral council

This is a ‘how-to-do-it’ workbook that lays out the necessary steps for forming, enabling and sustaining a parish pastoral council. It moves from introducing the concept of a parish pastoral council to its formation and planning, and on to its first few years of activity. The book provides detailed step-by-step procedures, which can be easily adapted to any parish situation. These procedures are further detailed on an accompanying CD, which provides visual aids and kick-off points for discussion. While other books on parish pastoral councils focus on the theory, this book is simply about getting it done. The focus is practicable and singular: to form a parish pastoral council with sufficient knowledge and training to get some ‘real’ work done for the good of all in the parish community.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Debra Snoddy is a full-time lecturer in Biblical Studies and is Chair of the Continuing Education Committee for the School of Adult and Community Learning at All Hallows College, Dublin. Debra has worked for the Archdiocese of Armagh, where she concentrated on creating and implementing a programme for the development of parish pastoral councils. Jim currently teaches a suite of facilitation courses at All Hallows College, several of which are accredited in an academic degree programme. Jim also does process consulting work with numerous organisations, helping them to plan and deal with complex organisational issues and manage change.

Andrew McNally works as a priest in the Archdiocese of Armagh, where he has served as a curate, Diocesan Adviser for Religious Education and as Director of Pastoral Renewal and Family Ministry. He has a licence in theology from the Gregorian University in Rome and an MEd from Boston College. In his present role, he has been involved in the formation and maintenance of parish pastoral councils, the development of diocesan pastoral plans and the establishment of pastoral areas and adult faith development.

PRAYERS FOR GRANDPARENTS

Catherine Wiley (editor)

Celebrating our Grandparents

From when we were very young our grandparents have watched over us and showered us with love. They have laughed with us, cried with us, and prayed with us. Can we ever thank them enough? The Catholic Grandparents Association, set up in 2007, wants to say thanks. The Association appealed to the children of Ireland to write a prayer especially for their grandparents, to thank them, honour them, and remember them if they have passed on. These beautiful prayers poured out love and affection for grandparents, alive and deceased. This very successful appeal resulted in hundreds of submissions nationwide. A selection of these prayers now appears in this publication.

A wonderful gift for any grandparent, Prayers for Grandparents treasures these most special of people and the most special of roles they play in our lives.

ABOUT THE EDITOR

The Catholic Grandparents Association was set up by Catherine Wiley, and for the past two years in September has hosted the increasingly popular National Grandparents Pilgrimage in Knock, Co. Mayo. The mission of the CGA is to pass on the faith from grandparents to grandchildren. Catherine Wiley is a native of Castlebar, Co. Mayo, and now lives at Murrisk, Co. Mayo. She is married to Stewart, and is a grandmother of ten.

RESOLVING BEREAVEMENT
Fiona McAuslan and Peter Nicholson

A new book in The Resolving Series: Resolving Bullying, Resolving Anger and Resolving Sibling Rivalry

Death is something we all must experience as a part of life, even children, and this book helps them to deal with the acute loss and strong emotions that result from the death of a loved one. It is aimed at children (aged six to twelve), their parents/guardians, teachers and professionals who support children during times of bereavement.

The story focuses on how loss affects Joe and Lisa in different ways, but how they both find support and learn how to talk about their feelings. They begin to regain confidence and learn how to be happy again. The story will help children understand and deal with grief and all the emotions that come with it, such as isolation, anger, depression, guilt, fear and insecurity.

The book also has a very useful toolbox section, with tips, games and information to help children put into practice what they have learned from the book. It is also supported by a website, which has additional material available for download for both children and parents.

SEASONS OF LIGHT

A Collection of Haiku

Dermot O’Brien

Dermot O’Brien invites the reader into a world of beauty through the delicate medium of haiku. A humble form of poetry, haiku, although short in length, are sublime in content. For a poetic form that is so often exclusively associated with Japan, Dermot O’Brien guides the reader effortlessly to a more familiar territory – Ireland.

In place of cherry blossoms, cranes and Kyoto, we are delighted by furze, cormorants and ‘a swan above the Slaney’. Haiku are an expression of nature and life in the purest possible form, and this collection is Dermot O’Brien’s attempt to say, in simple language, what it is like to be alive in this world and its promise of the next.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dermot O’Brien was born in Dublin and has lived in England and Spain. Having found inspiration in the poetry of Matsuo Basho, he has been writing and publishing haiku for many years, including Small World: Haiku on the Way (Veritas, 2004). He currently resides in Wexford.
