What is the Sacrament of Confirmation?

Confirmation is a continuance of what began in Baptism. In Ireland most people are baptised as infants. So Confirmation is an opportunity for them to consciously enter more deeply into the life of faith which was begun in Baptism.

Just before Jesus ascended into heaven, he told the Apostles to spread the Good News to the whole world. He then promised that he would be always with them. The significance of this promise failed to register with them until the first Pentecost, the day the Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit. With the power of the Holy Spirit, they had the courage to speak out and proclaim the Word of God.

On our Confirmation day, we receive the gift of the same Holy Spirit. The liturgy of Confirmation begins with the renewal of the baptismal promises, a clear indication that Confirmation follows on from Baptism. The sacramental sign of Confirmation is the anointing with the oil of chrism with the words, ‘Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit’. ‘This seal of the Holy Spirit marks our total belonging to Christ ‘ (CCC 1296). The person being anointed is called by name. We remember God’s words spoken long ago to the prophets in the Old Testament: ‘I have called you by name, you are mine.’ This is a further sign that the person now belongs to Christ.

With outstretched hands over all of the candidates the celebrant calls on God to pour out the gifts of the Holy Spirit on all of the candidates, the gifts of Wisdom, Understanding, Right Judgement, Courage, Knowledge, Reverence, Wonder and Awe in the presence of God.

The sponsor in Confirmation is often the same sponsor as that for Baptism, another sign of the connection between the two sacraments. Again the role of the sponsor is to offer support to the newly confirmed in their lives as followers of Jesus.
